DYING: Reborn is a flawed game with good intentions. Gameplay feels clunky and outdated, and the voice acting, unfortunately, fails to put you into a terrifying experience. But the game did keep me busy and won me over with its smart puzzle design, which is the core of the game and the most important part. Dying: Reborn isn't a particularly scary game, especially since you can't die. But it does possess a delightfully odd atmosphere and lots of fun puzzles to solve. This style of game, with all its indie seams and quirks, won't be for everybody. But if you can attune yourself to its quirky presentation (or just want those easy Achievements), Dying: Reborn won't kill your good time. Pros: - A first-person horror adventure that doesn't overstay its welcome. - Puzzles are often challenging but rarely frustrating. - The atmosphere is serious but weird, complete with oddities like a fish-headed man. Cons - The protagonist moves too slowly, and of course there's no run button. - Inventory use is clunky and unintuitive. - Copious screen tearing on Xbox One - Untranslated Chinese text slipped through onto the save file confirmation screen. Dying: Reborn costs $19.99 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Vita.

If you like a good puzzler, then Dying: Reborn is the champion of the conundrum, with twists and brain scratchers that will keep you occupied throughout. The controls are clumsy and don’t quite work right and the soundtrack when combined with the voice over is just plain annoying. But all that said, if you like the idea of being stuck in an escape room and like cerebral horror, then this could be for you.

In the end, Dying: Reborn VR could have been a fairly okay product if it weren’t so harshly abridged. It’s a good enough VR experience, but without a coherent story to back it all up, it amounts to nothing more than a paid demo. If you're new to PlayStation VR, there are much better ways to spend your money and time.

A short experience, DYING: Reborn lacks too much in satisfying puzzle experience to stand out from the eShop crowd.

With its bleak atmosphere and intriguing story, Dying: Reborn is an acceptable effort, bringing the escape room experience to consoles in an interesting, if often disturbing fashion. The PSVR version, while a little more viscerally effective, just doesn’t feel like a complete experience to recommend. Add in some weird glitches that make examining items in VR exceedingly difficult, and the result is the opposite of Resident Evil 7 – this is a VR-enabled game that’s much more satisfying when played on a standard television. Disclosures: This game is developed by Nekcom and published by Oasis Games.

Dying: Reborn is a textbook example on how to set up the groundwork for an 'Escape Room' experience, but it largely feels unfinished and content is repeated in order to fill in those gaps.
