Short, but sweet, A Story About My Uncle proves that a game doesn't have to engross you with dozens of hours of content in order to sell itself as a worthwhile experience. And while, yes, a longer story may have served to better flesh out a few underdeveloped parts of its overall narrative, what is on offer is something I, personally, found rather special.

With a price point of only $15, A Story About My Uncle is a must-own for anyone who loves games that make them think and can appreciate a good platforming challenge as well.

A Story About My Uncle is a wonderful and whimsical experience not unlike the movies of Pixar. It’s visually stunning; a wide array of colors oscillate brilliantly between dotting and flooding the environment, finely-detailed textures give life to plants, rocks, and sheets of ice, and even NPCs have been given unique animations that lead the towns and villages one walks through feeling occupied.

A Story About My Uncle makes some bold design choices, but pulls them off well. While its jumping and grappling mechanics can be a challenge, they can also be highly rewarding, and frequent save points make it easy to dive back in and have another go whenever failure happens. Meanwhile, great atmosphere and environment design pulls gamers through the charming little story. In fact, it's probably a good title to go into knowing very little, as much of the fun is discovering where it goes. Gone North Games is certainly a company to watch as it should be proud of what has been accomplished here.

The premise of the story is interesting and gets you hooked, and even though the game is linear and demands near perfect execution for many of its puzzles, it's still an interesting mechanical and visual experience, but A Story About My Uncle ultimately disappoints by ending very abruptly and not getting anywhere. On the other hand, you could also say that it revolutionizes the way we think about platformers.
