Refunct won’t challenge you in any way, and it’ll be over before you know it. But — as someone who still has fond memories of playing the game when it first came out on Xbox a few years ago — I can tell you from firsthand experience that its pleasantness will stick with you long after you’ve finished its very short run time.

Even though it’s short, I would definitely say it’s worth the small price tag if you enjoy relaxing games like Proteus or Journey. It doesn’t have any big emotional payoff or deep message to convey, but it’s still a game I enjoyed playing, and one I can see myself returning to after a long, stressful day.

I played Refunct on a day when I was falling apart from an overload of the chaos and hate in America, and retreating just for a few minutes into this serene, danger-free experience removed from news feeds, shouting politicians and burgeoning hate was much-needed balm for the soul. I heartily recommend it to anyone who is in need of same. Disclosures: This game is developed and published by Dominique Grieshofer.

It may be on the (very) short side, but Refunct is a refreshing, playful, and non-violent platforming experience. If you’re in the market for something a little different, it’s certainly worth a look.

Ultimately, Refunct is incredibly simple, severely brief, and painfully easy, but this is exactly how it bills itself on eShop. The description contains a bullet list of selling points like “Peaceful,” “Relaxing,” and “Seamless,” and it certainly delivers on these promises. The controls feel good, too, with the actual platforming being very forgiving, and there are little collectables you can pick up but to no real end. If you need something to take your mind off a stressful day or an impossible Dark Souls boss, or just as a break between 30-hour RPGs, Refunct might do the trick. Just don’t jump in expecting Mirror’s Edge or Portal.

Refunct seems to be the beginning of something great and in its current state it seems to be lacking a little individuality. Refunct does have some really solid aspects, the player movement and flow is honestly enjoyable. Multiple jumps all flow naturally into one another supported with a smooth pull up mechanic to let you reach higher ledges. What I will say about Refunct is, if you’re new or looking into game development Refunct would be the perfect game to study.
