Overall though, these complaints are minor. Transformers Battlegrounds is a brilliant little game for younger players and Transformers fans, and is well worth a look if you’re thinking of investing some time into turn-based strategy. And since we’re all staying home anyway, what better time could there be to get in some local multiplayer with your family?

Transformers: Battlegrounds on Xbox One offers a nice, simple set of virtual toys that you can play with, with a campaign of decent length and some interesting choices to make about customization and which characters to use. It lacks, of course, the deep customization of something like XCOM or XCOM 2, and there is something to be said that without permadeath the model doesn’t quite have the same tension. You know that if Bumblebee bites the dust, he’ll be back in the next mission. For younger gamers Battlegrounds may well hold more appeal with the lack of mission and enemy variety, as well as the somewhat simplistic squad management being probably about the right level.

Transformers: Battlegrounds is an excellent SRPG for fans of the franchise. Although genre veterans may find it to be a bit too simplistic, it's still a solid and rewarding experience that anyone can enjoy, especially genre beginners.

Transformers: Battlegrounds is a fun, inclusive, tactics game that may act as a gateway into the genre for younger gamers. If you can look past the mobile-esque aesthetic, the core gameplay is fun even though it doesn’t reach the heights of XCOM or Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.

As a turn-based strategy game primarily aimed at kids, its hard not to view Transformers: Battlegrounds as anything other than a success. It’s streamlined, but not so much so that older Transformers fans won’t be able get a kick out of the action, especially if they crank up the difficulty. And while its presentation isn’t the best, it’s bold and colourful enough to excite its target market. Add in the fact that it’s somewhat budget priced, and you have a game that should prove a hit with younger Transformers fans, and a good introduction to the turn-based strategy genre.

The game does control well, but it’s an eyesore with low-end textures that would be more at home on a PS2 launch title than a new release in 2020. Thankfully, it does sound great with strong voice work from the newest Transformers series cast and its soundtrack gets the blood pumping when needed.
