CRITIK
Stranger of Sword City is a first person turn-based RPG dungeon crawler. The main character is Human but you get to change the appearance, gender, and class. You can create a team of up to 6 characters with customizable ages, races, and talents. Higher ages give more bonus points for stats but come with less life points. You can have 16 registered characters at one time. Races include: Human, Elf, Dwarf, Migmy, and Ney. Classes include: Fighter, Knight, Samurai, Wizard, Cleric, Ranger, Ninja, and Dancer. Classes can be changed up to five times. Each class change will half that characters current level but you get to keep one skill learned from the previous class. The game includes the new and old art styles allowing you to switch whenever you want. The games was originally released in Japan under the name "Tsurugi no Machi no Ihoujin: Kuro no Kyuuden" on Playstation Vita and under the name "Tsurugi no Machi no Ihoujin: Shiro no Oukyuu" on Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows.

Stranger of Sword City is not only a fantastic reinterpretation of old-school RPGs; it's also one of the most gratifying games that I've ever played.

Stranger of Sword City mixes the old-school gameplay of classic RPGs with modern aesthetics and story. It adds a few new mechanics that differentiates it from other RPGs you’d find on any system, whether home or portable. If you are looking for a challenging RPG that gives you plenty of options, then give Stranger of Sword City a good look.

Stranger of Sword City takes the fundamentals of the dungeon crawler and coats it with a twist of Japanese. It infuses dark gorgeous visuals with engrossing gameplay, while fixing up some of the weaknesses of the genre by implementing extremely useful mechanics that help the game flow better and remove the sterile downtime that can happen often in other dungeon crawlers.

Overall, I was very pleased with Stranger of Sword City and go back to it when long periods of time (and an insatiable desire to work towards max’ing my party) are available to me. If you have a craving for the type of gridder where you change classes five times, grind for hours, and obsess over gear, then you just found your next purchase. Stranger of Sword City was reviewed on PS Vita using a preview copy provided by NIS America.

All in all, Stranger of Sword City is a far surpassing RPG in gameplay, but is brought down to lesser degrees by a majority of flaws found everywhere else. This does not discount the fun I did have with it though, and I would still recommend it to anyone willing to explore the more forgotten parts of JRPG lineage.
