Sonic Mania Plus
Sonic Mania Plus is an updated version of Sonic Mania that includes the Encore DLC. Digital versions of Sonic Mania on all platforms can be upgraded to Sonic Mania Plus by purchasing the Encore DLC separately. Plus is also available as a physical release and marks the first time any version of Sonic Mania was available on physical media. Released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Switch, in addition to including the complete version of Sonic Mania Plus on a disc/cartridge it also comes packaged with a reversible cover with alternate box art, an art book and a holographic outer sleeve.

If you passed up on Sonic Mania last year, this is your chance to play one of the generation’s best platformers in its best form. Sonic Mania Plus Developer: Headcannon, PagodaWest Games, Sega Price: $29.99 Platforms: PS4 (reviewed), Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC MonsterVine was provided with a PS4 code for review. My love for Sonic Mania is well-known, as I went so far as to say that “Sonic Mania will remind the game industry why it loved Sonic in the first place” in my review.

Sonic Mania Plus is the same game from last year, but with the addition of the new story DLC that absolutely makes worth your money and time. Whether you’re buying just the DLC to upgrade, or buying new to experience it, Sonic Mania Plus is excellent in every way. It is now bigger and better by virtue of having more things to do in this insanely well made Sonic game. Sonic Mania Plus is an essential and important game in the history of Sonic the Hedgehog that you must play.

The fan outcry for a physical version of Sonic Mania was enormous, and while it did take a year for SEGA to act, it has ultimately delivered a package that is simply outstanding. After so many bad outings in the series, Sonic's legacy was beginning to turn to dust. Many mistakes have been made in trying to emulate, yet evolve the 2D adventures of yesteryear, with failed projects, such as Sonic 4. Sonic Mania Plus, however, restores the series back to the gold standard. It will be revered for decades with the community who will no doubt set this as the benchmark for any future sequel to the series.

Sonic Mania Plus is definitely worth checking out, especially if you happened to miss out on the original release of Sonic Mania. It’s a true return to form for everyone’s favorite hedgehog, and it’s definitely nice to have a reason to revisit.

Somehow, Christian Whitehead and team have made the definitive version of Sonic even more definitive. The genuinely challenging stages are chock-full of secrets, and will require multiple playthroughs to find everything they have to offer. The lengthy campaign may not have as stellar pacing as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but it provides both nostalgia and fresh experiences.
