Ray's the Dead is a game where you are the leader of the zombie army. Its story driven gameplay will challenge you with a satisfying blend of action, tactics, puzzle, stealth, and adventure, all rolled into one fresh gaming experience. Sneak, smash, laugh, and moan your way through the last hurrah of the 1980's as you take on the role of Ray, the newly risen zombie. Along the way you'll discover who Ray really is, how he ended up dead, and most curiously, what is this giant lightbulb contraption sticking out of his head!

It’s the best successor to Pikmin’s legacy that I’ve ever encountered. It’s got a great story, endlessly inventive gameplay, and a charming visual style. Yes, it’s gruesome, and yes, it can be a little upsetting at times, but Ray’s The Dead manages to be more than an assemblage of comedic ’80s references and borrowed mechanics — it rises above its inspirations and becomes a truly special experience. Disclosures: This game is developed and published by Ragtag Studio and is available on PC and PS4.

Ray’s The Dead is not a perfect game, but it’s an awesome option for the spooky Halloween season. If you are looking to have a fun, surprisingly deep story experience with a game and revel in what makes Halloween such a beloved holiday, then Ray’s The Dead should be on your list. Ray’s The Dead is available now on Playstation 4 and PC on Steam.

Ray's The Dead is something of a mixed bag. When its charm is able to shine through it's a joy to play, but all too often it feels clumsy. After such a long wait it may disappoint those who have been keeping an eye on it since 2014, which is a shame given there's a gem to be found among the rotten flesh. Even though Ray's The Dead's gameplay isn't particularly fresh, its variety and cleverly presented story make it a fun experience.Ray's The Dead gameplay video → More games with zombies Vigil: The Longest Night Review Switch ★★★★☆ There have been quite a few 2D indie games that are clearly inspired by Dark Souls and Vigil: The Longest Night is one of the best. When I first started playing Vigil: The Longest Night, I didn't quite know what to expect but as I progressed, I became more and more immersed in its captivating and open-ended game world.

Gameplay is where things start to rot, though. Combat devolves to waiting for an enemy's green outline and then spamming X to send your zombies in for the kill. There's not much more strategy to engagements than that, really, although you can opt to regain some lost health by consuming a bad guy's brains before they kick the bucket. There are batteries to find to increase your health, and gravestones to read, but the levels themselves bounce from small combat zones to simple puzzles. Unfortunately, poor performance means controls are sluggish and the frame rate dips like mad when the screen is busy. There's some fun to be extracted from this, especially given that Halloween is upon us, but sadly this is a game that won't live long in the memory.

Ray’s the Dead is a mixed bag, but it’s a unique one with a lot of heart. Just be aware going in that it’s going to take effort to like the game as much as you wish you could.
