This dark depiction of Beauty and the Beast works, but only if you recognize what you’re getting into: a musical experience focusing on an abused psyche desperately trying to break free from known shackles, only to fly right into a cage that represents both prison and freedom.

There’s still a lot to appreciate about Of Bird and Cage, such as the music, the tone, the desire to do something like what we almost saw. Hopefully, this isn’t the last from the developers as I respect the drive, but slow down, pull it back, work with the good ideas, and don’t let the music go flat again. Score: 6/10 As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 6 equates to “Decent.” It fails to reach its full potential and is a run-of-the-mill experience Disclosure: critic received a copy of the game via the publisher for the Of Bird and Cage review.

The story had me pretty hooked throughout even if it was a bit confusing at times, and the seeds of a decent idea in the time limited puzzle exploration scenes are there. But every time I started to find my rhythm with Of Bird and Cage I’d get tripped up by a scene, be it bugs or simply poor design choices, and end up feeling off tempo entirely.Become a Patron! As a fan of emotive music and story-driven games like the Life Is Strange series and Tell Me Why, I was excited to see a title like Of Bird and Cage appear on the market. It seemed to promise a blend of deep narrative and powerful music. After watching the trailer, my interest had well and truly been piqued. It’s not only the kind of game that you can finish in an afternoon, it’s also the kind that doesn’t leave much of an impression on you after the fact. While it’s able to roll down the road, it’s doing so holding things together with zip ties and a dream. It’s the kind of hot mess where the best experience would be to just give the album a listen on Spotify, because everything else just doesn’t do it justice. ~ Final Score: 5/10 ~ Review copy provided by All In Games for Steam.
