With a gentle learning curve, tight mechanics and immensely gratifying gameplay, NHL 16 stands as EA Sports’ most accomplished release of the year. 4.6 Ice, Ice, Baby! By all accounts, NHL 15 was a disappointing outing for EA’s ice hockey franchise, removing several staple modes and raising the ire of fans. Personally my knowledge of these factors is anecdotal at best, as NHL 16 is actually my first foray into the franchise, so, besides from doing a bit of research on the series prior to diving in with the latest instalment, I am approaching the series with fresh eyes. And what an experience I had – Although the sport isn’t all that popular over here in Australia, I’m fairly familiar with the teams and have a rudimentary knowledge of the rules, etc.

With feedback from the ‘GameChangers’ community, NHL 16 not only makes strides ahead for fans of the video game adaptations, but for fans of the game of hockey as a whole. A middle ground has been reached between realism and fun that is wholly surprising. NHL 16 isn’t just a step in the right direction, it’s the game hockey fans have been waiting for.

NHL 16 is probably the most inclusive NHL game to date. The on ice trainer will help new comers in a way that NHL has never done before, even someone like me who has been playing the game for a number of years seems to have improved, breaking bad habits like favoring the glove side or poor cycling of the puck in the offensive zone. I think EA took note of player complaints from the previous game and made NHL 15 should have been. REVIEW CODE: A complimentary Microsoft Xbox One code was provided to Brash Games for this review.

Honestly, NHL 16 may be the improvement that was needed to keep fans happy. By no means is it perfect, there may be some small foibles to the game, such as the overly aggressive AI, however, that’s not a hurdle that can’t be passed.
