Our thoughts on Best Month Ever are mostly positive. The gameplay is more like a TellTales esque game mixed with point and click mechanics. It doesn’t have a ton of gameplay in it aside from minigames and walking from point A to point B. The sound design is phenomenal with voice acting that helps you feel the emotional weight of this narrative driven title. The graphics mixed with the camera angles are solid. The game could have been improved upon with character art for portraits to help us see the expressions of the characters. Overall we recommend this game unless you have issues with games that include moments of Racism, Sexism and emotional abuse. The narrative of this game has some ridiculously good high and low moments that help expand on the characters themselves. You won’t regret playing this game and seeing the effect a mother has on her child. Review Disclosure Statement: Best Month Ever was provided to us by Klabater for review purposes.

Best Month Ever is a touching adventure game about a mother trying to set her son up with a good life as she faces a terminal illness. The game tackles serious subjects such as racism, sexism, and violence, and the choices you make along the way will affect Mitch and shape the man he grows up to be.

The appeal of Best Month Ever! is entirely dependent on whether you are interested in interactive narratives. For those who are interested, like me, I would be inclined to give the game the next award up than the one below. The game is perhaps priced a little too highly right now considering its run time. But if narrative is your thing and you have the money to spend, then I hope you enjoy the game as much as I did.

Best Month Ever! is truly unique in its premise and setting. Stepping into the shoes of a terminally ill single mother was gut-wrenching, and navigating 1969 through the eyes of her biracial son gave me anxiety. Although I do wish my choices had a bigger impact and that more focus was given to preparing Mitch for the future instead of hanging on by my fingernails to what felt like Louise’s wild last ride, Best Month Ever! was different enough to keep me going. If you love narrative-driven games and have plenty of patience, Best Month Ever! is worth the road trip.

Eventually, Best Month Ever becomes a largely run-of-the-mill road trip; you know, the sort of trip you don’t mind embarking on, but would be perfectly okay if it has to end prematurely. In other words, it’s not exactly the most thrilling or boring of journeys, but also one that needs frequent pit stops to sustain your interest, if you wish to see the game through to its conclusion. What’s unfortunate is that Best Month Ever also unabashedly pines for several playthroughs, as evident in its myriad endings, but the vehicle it’s run on guzzles your stamina and patience like the least fuel efficient of cars. Unfortunately, I only have the capacity for a single excursion or two; I don’t think I can stay awake as the road trip sluggishly cruises towards its destination. Score: 3/5.

Best Month Ever! has its positive moments too, as the core of the story is that of a single mother doing her best to cherish her final days with her son, while making sure he will be loved and looked after when she passes. Unfortunately, this core sentiment is tainted by its various problematic moments and its inadvertent enforcement of harmful stereotypes. Best Month Ever! tries to tell a complex and loving story but the inherent cultural misunderstandings that come from race and nationality make those efforts fall flat and mar what is otherwise a serviceable narrative about love and family. Best Month Ever! is available now on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch with a PlayStation release sometime in the near future.

Best Month Ever! is a short, enjoyable narrative that perhaps suffers from high ambitions that don't quite pay off. Glitches in the game can really take you out of what would otherwise be a fluid experience.
