The House of the Dead: Remake is a reunion for old-school gamers while introducing a new generation to the arcade classic. If you grew up playing the arcade version, you will absolutely enjoy the PC version of the remake. If you enjoy horror survivals then you give this classic a playthrough (especially with a friend). The biggest takeaway is that the remake has not abandoned what makes the series a timeless classic. This review is the critique and thoughts of one writer.

House of the Dead: Remake, as a simple remaster, is an excellent example of what a remaster is supposed to be. It gives the original game a visual facelift while going to the extreme to not tamper with the familiar gameplay and aesthetic that long time fans have come to know and love. But anyone would be hard-pressed to consider this as a remake, rather than a remaster. Where the game begins to flounder is in regards to the very limited pool of new content. The lack of online multiplayer support, combined with the limited amount of new content to keep fans occupied beyond the first hour, makes it hard to justify the $24.99 retail price. If the game had launched at $9.99 or $14.99 instead, these limited additions might have been an easier pill to swallow. As it stands, while the small changes and additions might prove to be a love letter to existing fans, House of the Dead: Remake doesn’t do much to appeal to potential new fans as well.

THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD: Remake is precisely that, a remake of one of the most iconic and best rail-shooters of all time. In terms of core gameplay and story, there isn’t much; however, the touch-ups are all that was needed for a perfect refresh. To add to this, the gyro controls are surprisingly great and the best way to play. Grab yourself a joy-con and a willing partner, and shoot your way through bullet-hell in THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD.

THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD: Remake and the Xbox Series X|S upgrade updates the classic for a new generation. It’s the best way to play the game, unless you know where one of those old arcade cabinets is stashed.

As much as I’m left wanting for proper lightgun support – and a few extra modes – I can’t deny being utterly thrilled to see The House of the Dead back on my screen. The visual up-spuff is great, and MegaPixel have remained as true as they possibly could to the original game’s gameplay and beats. Even using a controller HotD is great fun, and those who haven’t spent the best part of 25 years playing it will just be treated to a gloriously fun arcade experience.Become a Patron! The game is a must-buy if you are looking for a fun-to-play title for yourself or a friend, and want to indulge in hours of fun, or just have a game to practice your trigger finger on. If you are a fan of the series or lightgun games from the Wii / PlayStation Move era, then this game is right up your alley. The game is currently a Nintendo Switch exclusive and retails for $24.99 / €24.99.
