Gunscape provides a toolbox full of inconic weapons, monsters and level elements as the foundation for players to build co-op, and single-player, FPS levels or MP Arenas in the most intuitive way possible. It does so by offering a series of simple tools based on a block-placement interface that many gamers will be familiar with. Unlike similar tools Gunscape aims to empower its authors to enjoy the process of abstract level design by imposing refreshing restraints that map communities enjoy. Rather than building a game players will build a level within a game that features robust action and a vast array of weapons, enemies and components.

So, Gunscape isn’t another Minecraft. It’s a game for fans of old-school first person shooters. There’s a lot of references to the origins of the genre and the infrastructure to cater to online fans, although content is very limited at the moment.

For those that miss the ’90s and its truly classic FPS titles, then Gunscape is going to be a real treat. The builder is easy to use and offers a pleasantly nostalgic array of materials that are really only limited by your imagination, as cliché as that sounds.

While I appreciate its old-school FPS style and community-built levels, its gameplay stumbles more than it struts While modern FPSs continue to march on towards providing as realistic and visceral a shooting experience as possible, there’s something to be said for going back to simpler times and appreciating where we’ve come from.

If you are the creative type, you can easily hop into a Minecraft-ish world to quickly make the 90’s era shooter of your dreams, all using legally safe knockoff assets of games such as Turok, Wolfenstein 3D, Quake, Doom, Bioshock, and many others. There are a fair amount of pieces from each of the categories, but in most cases, it is some textures, a couple of weapons, and then a few skins, but I think there could’ve been some more in each category.

A admirable attempt at opening up the world of FPS level creation to a wider audience, Gunscape is perhaps a little too grungy for complete newbies to the genre – and those more experienced at shooters might be better off simply learning how to use the likes of TrenchBroom.
