StarBlood Arena is VR’s Overwatch. Oozing with personality, it explodes with a style and grace that one might not expect to come from the scrappiest corners of the galaxy. The tight, frenetic combat takes some standard shooter ideas and literally turns them on their head, putting you in the pilot’s seat in a way only possible with virtual reality. If you haven’t taken the plunge, StarBlood Arena is a damn good reason to get PSVR. If you already own one, I’ll see you in the arena. StarBlood Arena review code provided by publisher.

Starblood Arena easily stands alongside the best competitive games, fostering a competitiveness and desire to improve as much as Rocket League or Overwatch do. Like those modern classics, there will hopefully be a long tail of content updates to keep gameplay fresh, be it extra characters to up-end team strategies or new modes to test hard-earned skills.

It’s a pity the pricing isn’t as accessible as the action, but this is a fun and unusual online shooter that suits PlayStation VR surprisingly well. Pros: The controls work great in conjunction with the headset, and the tightly designed maps create a shooter like no other (well, except Descent).

Starblood Arena isn’t a profound expression of the power of VR, but it’s hard not to appreciate a rock solid shooter that will provide hours of multiplayer battles for those willing to put the time in. Ultimately it’s a little too niche to become the definitive multiplayer PSVR game, and the struggles to get into matches aren’t going to please people that threw down $39.99 to play it. But if you’ve got the patience the game will regularly ask of you, you won’t come away disappointed.
