The accessible gameplay for newcomers and hardcore players is pretty spot on with what I expect from an arcade air combat game. The dogfights are exciting, ground bomb runs are accurate and the slow motion mechanic, named TrazerTime™ slow-motion precision firing adds something really cool.

To call Flying Tigers: Shadows over China a pleasant surprise would be an understatement. Going in completely blind I was expecting a boring history lesson with ancient planes. What I got was a compelling story with flight gameplay that is fun and exciting. The challenge modes are a welcome change of pace and online multiplayer can potentially extend replay value for years. The price is currently listed at $18.99 USD, but the quality content and overall experience is easily worth double that.

With the desolate multiplayer population to the side, Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China will help satiate those hungering for a little bit of air combat in a genre that is in need of a few more good titles. Controls are mostly comfortable on the Xbox controller, though it would have been nice to see support for the HOTAS. There’s enough diverse content on offer to justify the generous price tag, but don’t expect to be blown away. This game was tested and reviewed on Xbox One.

If you’re craving an aerial combat title, as not many release these days, then Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China will certainly get you through a slow weekend with nothing else to play. The $18.99 CAD price tag isn’t completely out of the ballpark, but that’s as long as you know there’s essentially no community playing this online, which is why you would keep continuing to play after the brief campaign is completed. Flying Tigers is completely serviceable for what it offers, but don’t expect to be blown away, even if the premise of experiencing rarely depicted battles excites you.

What FTSOC offers, principally, is perhaps the best video game look at the China-Burma-India theatre ever done. That’s a low bar to clear, admittedly, but one that should be appreciated by fans of aviation games with access to either an Xbox One or a decent gaming PC. While the too-short campaign and lack of multiplayer community limit the game’s replayability, its budget price should attract anyone looking for a game that can be completed in a weekend.

Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China may have proven to be a bit of a let down with its campaign, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that the combat is rather enjoyable.
