With its cheerful gore and wholehearted embrace of adorable violence, Slayaway Camp toes a line that has tripped up many developers before them. (Anyone remember the tonal disaster that was Naughty Bear?) This is both an ingeniously-built puzzle game and a horror extravaganza rolled into one, and it’s a combination that must be seen to be believed. Horror fans will enjoy great comedy writing about a subject they love, puzzle fans will have their brains expertly teased, and fans of both will find the game of their dreams. Disclosures: This game is developed and published by Blue Wizard Digital.

There's something truly special about Slayaway Camp. What could have been a one-note gag instead manages to be a hilarious, charming, and ingenious puzzle game. Actually stopping to write this review was incredibly difficult; the game is just that addicting. There's something new around each corner, with numerous unlockables and dozens of levels. Plus, new content is still being added, with the developers demonstrating some true passion for the project. It may be one-way only, but a trip to Slayaway Camp should not be missed.

Slayaway Camp does exactly what it sets out to do: it makes you giggle and provides a vast series of fun logic puzzles. Its creativity, charm, and clear love for this specific kind of nostalgic film subculture make it worth playing for even the puzzle-game averse. Blue Wizard Digital is a relatively new studio formed by Jason Kapalka, co-founder of PopCap Games (Bejeweled, Peggle, Plants vs Zombies) and indie developers Nate Schmold (Cosmochoria) and Ido Yehieli (Cardinal Quest).

Slayaway Camp is a brilliant and funny block-sliding puzzle game that’s drenched in good-humored gore. The screams of the teenagers, police, office workers, beach bathers and other victims punctuates each kill as you unravel the specific set of moves necessary to complete each level.

Overall, Slayaway Camp hits the mark when it comes to being an homage to classic slasher films. It is cheesy, filled with murder and crazy kills, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. While the puzzles can be challenging early on and easy towards the end, they are still fulfilling to complete and that sense of accomplishment doesn’t go away at any point. While it would’ve been nice to see some additional kills and hear some additional lines of dialogue from the narrator, it still works for what it is. Slayaway Camp is one of the best homages to classic slasher films and should be an easy buy for any horror buff looking to pass the time.

Slayaway Camp isn’t a large nor an expansive experience – but it doesn’t want to be. It wants to be a simple puzzle game that through evolving mechanics becomes a difficult and satisfying experience. It revels in both the ludicrous and outlandishly fun things that come from its original genre while making fun of its stupidities. It won’t be for everyone but for those who enjoy basic puzzling at its best, Slayaway Camp is a killer.
