Overview

Outcry is a first person psychological thriller point-and-click adventure video game. You receive a letter from your brother, a scientist, who invites you to his home so that he can show you the results of his project, and you can get some ideas for your next book. However, once you arrive you find that your brother has mysteriously vanished, leaving all his material possessions to you - including a large, strange machine and a message telling you not to reproduce his experiments.

While there are many aspects of this game that are interesting, there are also many times when the gameplay is boring and lackluster. The story as a whole just doesn’t appeal or resonate, and the writing is bad. Making people listen to the same spoken passages every time they look at some of the entries is not ideal, either.

If you like your puzzles tough and confusing, then Outcry might be a good choice for you, but otherwise I wouldn’t recommend it.

All in all, with such an intriguing premise and strong production values, the developers had the foundation to make a great game, but the corny plot, pretentious writing, uninteresting characters, and some questionable design issues prevent it from achieving its full potential. The game is also quite brief: it’s unlikely that a seasoned player will spend more than five or six hours to reach the ending, unless becoming significantly stuck on particular puzzles, though that’s likely to happen at some point with the pixel hunting and lack of feedback offered.

All told, Outcry isn't a bad game. It's not one I would recommend for players who aren't already a fan of the genre. Veteran adventure gamers might find it a nice afternoon's diversion but it's not going to be a standout in their library.

Outcry is one of the more surreal and impenetrable adventure games ever made. The Good - Philosophical storyline that questions the nature of existence - Distinctive visual gimmick and dramatic musical score. The Bad - So bizarre and lacking in feedback that it loses you - Puzzle clues are too often buried in dense, boring documents - Visuals are often so stylized that they obscure clues and objects. Adventure gamers looking for something off the beaten path get more than they bargain for in Outcry.
