CRITIK
Welcomed aboard a luxurious cruise liner, you are spending your time enjoying this rare opportunity. But at the height of the evening, things are not as they appear as a murder brings it all to a grinding halt. With no idea which direction to turn, blame is thrown around the ship in panic as the guests start to suspect one another. As night falls and a cry echoes out through the ship, the true nightmare begins. NightCry is a 3D point-and-click adventure game. Click to move your character and search the ship. Interact with objects by selecting them. Make sure you check it all carefully, for the clues you need may not be easy to find. But searching isn't all you will be doing. As you search, you will be haunted, and the Scissor Walker will be coming for you.

Your enjoyment of NightCry is going to depend a lot on your perspective, which is why I suspect this is going to be one of the most divisive horror games since Deadly Premonition. To judge NightCry at face value would be to grossly overlook all the work that Nude Maker has done to create an authentic Clock Tower-style, classic stalker horror experience for the modern day. You’re going to have to look past the game’s often ugly exterior to see the beauty behind every design choice, every camera angle and every mindblowing plot twist, and you’re going to need to be a horror fan who isn’t spoiled on the modern trends of jump scares and instant gratification. The ambition and the unique vision of NightCry genuinely make me excited that there is a future in traditional gameplay.

As much as I could criticise the game for its shortcomings, B-Movie dialogue and writing, alongside movement control issues and inconsistent/erratic/badly designed logical item puzzles with equally poor flag conditions for the branching paths and endings, the game was quite enjoyable. I was effectively scared when the game commanded it, and there was equal amounts of tension and uncertainty felt as a result of both intentional design, and unintentional from things such as inconsistent game logic in regards to the developer-player contract.

NightCry almost reaches “so bad it’s good” status, but veers on the side of frustrating a little too often. Combined with its short length (around 4 or so hours to see the first ending) and myriad of technical faults on Vita, it's one you'll probably want to think about before buying. If you’re particularly interested in an old-fashioned horror title it might be exactly what you’re after.
