NBA 2K17 addresses most of my biggest issues from last year in cutting out canned animations and going back to basics with MyCareer, and it's still as polished as ever. It's easy to take its excellence for granted, but Visual Concepts' ambition and willingness to take risks keeps it from ever becoming stale. NBA 2K17 is the champion, and it's tough to see it losing that title anytime soon.

The action on the court is fast, fluid and accessible, but with enough depth and detail to keep you hooked for the long haul. The visuals are consistently impressive, down to the crowds and the pre-match spectacles that put the razzle-dazzle in the sport. Online play is smooth and easy, and there are so many modes and features that you'd need a good few weeks of play just to get through them all. In fact, there's so much content that the menus are confusing, while we'd like to see a few less cut-scenes and a few more options in MyCareer. Still, let's not dwell on minor niggles.

NBA 2K17, in my honest opinion, is the undisputed greatest sports simulation game. The slight gameplay kinks and exploits are part of the greatness in the sense that they allow for interesting and unpredictable gameplay. The customisability, gameplay fluidity, graphics and realism all combine to create this sensational game which allows basketball fans to step into the world of NBA players, General Managers and coaches and create the league and basketball they love and cherish.

The ridiculously overstuffed suite of gameplay options extends even further with the inclusion of historic teams for head-to-head play and collectible card based MyTeam mode fashioned after EA Sports’ Ultimate Team. This game has no shortage of ways to hoop. Regardless of which mode you’re playing, NBA 2K17 treats its players to best-in-class presentation and gameplay.
