Old-school vertical shooting meets some welcome alterations in this well-made modern retro classic While until this week I’d never heard of Hanaji Games, playing two of its retro shooters (this and Dezatopia) has certainly marked them as a developer to watch in the space.

If a lack of online leaderboards is a deal-breaker for you, Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo won’t be to your liking. Despite the high value I place on that feature, I found the game was able to present enough to dig into that I still got my kicks anyway. With so many unique mechas to play as, stages to challenge, mini-bosses and bosses to battle, and a bevy of unlockables, this is one shoot-em-up that just keeps on giving. If you don’t care about online score attacking, you’ll likely have an even better time with it than I did. SwitchArcade Score: 4/5 New Releases Montgomery Fox and the Case of the Missing Ballerinas ($14.99) Another hidden object adventure from the folks at Ocean Media, this time starring a crime-solving fox named Montgomery.

What it lacks in visual appeal, it makes up for in depth and polish. It is too bad that Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo doesn’t excel in all aspects. If it did, it could rival some of the best shooters that Treasure is known for. Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo was reviewed on Nintendo Switch using a copy provided by Hanaji Games.

The pixel art is strong, wiry, and grainy. The FM Synth soundtrack creates an effect like watching an 80s action movie on a dusty VHS cassette. The cherry on top is fast-paced dodge-and-destroy gameplay against a rogues gallery of killer robots. N

Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo is crude and simple, but manages to passably provide an enjoyable Genesis inspired Bullet Hell game.
