It’s always a good day when I get to play a game that was thought to be lost in a forgotten era of gaming. Nostalgia hits hard for me with Enclave HD and although very excited to give it another go, it’s just a port of an old game. Am I happy it is back and playable on current hardware? Absolutely! Do I wish a little more love was done to it? For sure. I’d probably have a hard time convincing someone to give Enclave HD a try if they didn’t play it on original Xbox but for those that did, I think it’s worth the admission price. This game was reviewed based on Xbox One review code, using an Xbox Series S|X console.

I hate to use this term but Enclave HD really feels like a cheap attempt at remastering a cult classic. The story still holds up well and a fantastic updated soundtrack helps fans of the original game find reason to revisit. With dated combat, awful enemy design and AI and visuals that really have been left in the past, Enclave HD is a another lack lustre attempt to remaster in today’s era of video games. Better to have been laid to rest in the past.

Enclave HD provides quite a bit to do across its two campaigns but as an HD re-release it sadly disappoints. The visuals didn’t get enough of a touchup and the gameplay and mission design very much show their age. If you were a fan of the original game, you’ll enjoy this the most while anyone who wasn’t familiar with it will likely wonder what was so special about it. *Enclave HD is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Enclave is a quirky game that has some moments and I enjoyed revisiting it. I love this era where any game can come back and it is great for nostalgia. If you don’t have any fond memories of this game you might want to steer clear. This is not going to impress anyone in today’s world, but for those looking for a trip down memory lane of this obscure title, this version achieves what it set out to do.

Enclave HD is by no means an essential purchase, but temper your expectations and you may still have fun.

I was ecstatic to see Enclave HD coming back. I have such fond memories of playing it twenty years ago, and I knew I was going into it with rose-tinted glasses; the characters, the levels, the gear, everything. We didn’t need Enclave HD to be a full-blown remaster, but with a little more love it could be something truly great. An homage to classic fantasy and adventure games. I enjoyed my time playing Enclave only because I already knew the game. I don’t feel like enough improvements have been made to hold a modern audience, regardless of how fun it used to be.
