Distrust is pretty top-notch stuff. It’s the sign of intelligent and well-considered mechanics that something as inherently repetitive as Distrust never once felt tedious to me. Russian publisher Alawar previously gave us last year’s Beholder, a similarly high-concept little gem from their home country. This makes them two-for-two on Steam releases, and I can’t wait to see what other fascinating indies they bring us from their side of the world. Disclosures: This game is developed by Cheerdealers and published by Alawar Premium.

All in all and Distrust is a very interesting proposition. The setting is great, very bleak and creepy, and the oppressive feeling as madness starts to close in is an effective one. With fresh levels each time and the overall challenge of the game, the longevity certainly appears to be secure. One slightly strange design decision however is in regards the achievements, as the majority of those unlocked have had 0G value, with only five in the whole game scoring 200G each.

When you eventually get going, the game is surprisingly addictive and moody, with bare-bones execution that still maintains an excellent attention to detail and an effective audio design rising up the hair on your back. The wicked gameplay loop of trying to survive and escape is equal parts fun and frustrating – as it pretty much should be. Video game nerd & artist.

The survival aspect of the game saved my opinion on it. It was a very bitter beginning and I had to get passed a bit of frustration with the comparison to The Thing despite being nothing remotely inspired by it other than the location. As a survival game, Distrust is enjoyable and challenging even when I feel the enemies aren't all that exciting.
