CRITIK
Commandos: Strike Force is a first-person shooter video game and the fifth installment of the critically acclaimed Commandos series. It is developed by Pyro Studios and published by Eidos Interactive. Released during the first months of 2006, the game makes a departure from the first four games. Although the missions are set up in a similar fashion (several different objectives, some to be achieved through stealth, others through use of force) and in most occasions the player is allowed to change between different characters, this is the first game in the series to apply a first-person perspective, like many other World War II-inspired games, in contrast to the overhead view of the earlier games. Hence, the game is far more similar to the Medal of Honor or Call of Duty games than to earlier entries of the series.

Overall, however, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the spirit of the old games somehow managed to live on in the FPS iteration. Granted, tactics are not as heavily emphasized as they were, but one must commend Pyro for giving the player several paths for completing the objectives, as well as giving it their best shot to emulate the environment and the tactical layout of the strategy games.

There have been several crucial moments that made me laugh out loud, and others that made me feel a sense of cerebral accomplishment - feelings that are all-too rare when playing an FPS. I suppose it'd be fair to say that the Commandos series has been successfully updated, but not without the sense that it is lacking something of the detail and complexity of its RTS cousins.

Dull and boring, not too many will play it longer than one sit through. For the fan of the series, you may want to rent since there is no nostalgic moments to reminisce about.

Commandos is mildly entertaining, adds a few twists to the gameplay that are a bit refreshing, but ultimately falls short. I was having as much fun as this guy We've gone to battle in World War II countless times, fought every conceivable battle, piloted every plane, commandeered every tank, and shot every weapon.

It's certainly more of the same when it comes to the stealth action and FPS genres that it follows, and doesn't really rise above or try anything particularly new in order to provide that little bit of an edge that it needs to make it out of the realm of mediocrity. While the sound certainly has a lot to like, most everything else about Commandos Strike Force remains mired in the past.
