CRITIK
Bullet Witch is a shooter video game for the Xbox 360 developed by Cavia. It was released in Japan on July 27, 2006 by AQ Interactive, followed by a release in North America on February 27, 2007. Atari Europe handled translations and other localization efforts. The game was not released with a multiplayer component, although players could participate in a score ranking competition via Xbox Live. Downloadable content includes new costumes and new missions. A later Japanese re-release under the "Xbox 360 Platinum Collection" label included all of the downloadable content on the game disc. The player takes control of a witch named Alicia Claus in the near future of 2013. Mankind is on the brink of destruction, having suffered major natural disasters and an invasion of demons. The protagonist Alicia utilizes a gun rod that has transformations such as shotgun, machine gun, and Gatling gun. This weapon can also be used to cast spells.

Bullet Witch is a like B-grade movie; it's far from perfect due to its modest production values but that's why you love it anyway. Who can I recommend the game as out of place and time than this to? At least not to tech-heads who find even 4K resolution insufficient. But anyone like me who enjoys curious games of the past, appreciates the Japanese penchant for drama, just loves pretty and moody female protagonists and is fed up with most of modern gaming fads can find plenty to like about Bullet Witch.

Bullet Witch is a strange, quirky game that feels profoundly unfinished even as it’s charming players with its madness. It’s a complete mess, but with all the DLC included, it’s absolutely worth fifteen dollars. Rating: 6 out of 10 Disclosures: This game is developed by Marvelous and published by XSEED.

Even though it's been over a decade, Bullet Witch hasn't aged as badly as might be expected. There is some creativity in Alicia's skill-set. Summoning ravens and rose spikes lends a pleasing dynamic to combat. Also, reducing an entire city block to rubble just to kill a few demons never gets old. A typical play-through will only take about two-and-a-half hours, but the extra missions and harder difficulties are sufficient reasons to keep playing. Keep in mind, however, that this game is a product of its time, and its most appealing aspects run counter to what gamers take for granted today.

Bullet Witch has some promise and some really great ideas behind it, however, the execution itself is incredibly sub par. The destructible environments certainly added more action and when using the gun rod becomes too boring, the magic system is adequate enough to keep you going through the game.

Bullet Witch is just as bad today as it was in 2006 – whether that’s a good thing or not is up to your personal tastes, but in my opinion, the game requires far too many friends and alcohol involved in the action for the campiness to be tolerable. At least it didn’t get worse, right?
