With BoxVR, you’ll find yourself losing weight and becoming much healthier before you even realise. Whether it’s because you intend to burn those calories or show yourself to be a rhythm boxing God, you will be fitter from playing this – which is exactly what it sets out to do. It’s an (upper)cut above the rest of the competition in being a game that is designed to make you exercise but while also being extremely fun in its own right. If you’re anything like me, exercise is one of those words that instantly makes me want to curl up and hide, it sounds like a lot of effort. Well, with this boxercise game, that effort disappears. Yes it’s tiring, yes you will sweat, but who cares when you’re having so much fun doing it? If I can do it, you definitely can.

BoxVR brings together the rhythm of music and movement into a fitness gaming package that is one part color coordinated jabs, hooks, uppercuts, and blocks, along with leaning left, right, and squatting down. If you haven’t tried a fitness VR game or think that gaming and fitness shouldn’t be in the same sentence together, then you need to try BoxVR. When you load up BoxVR you can see a listing of routines based on time intensity, as well as ones that contain or omit some aspects of the boxing regiment like whether or not you will be doing squats, for instance.

Utilizing virtual reality to help get gamers up off the couch is a great use of the technology, and BoxVR is about as good as it gets when it comes to fitness games. It's a fast, challenging, and entertaining way to try to lose some extra pounds with your VR helmet. I doubt it'll help you train for a real-life boxing match, but BoxVR is as fun as actually punching someone in the face without any of the legal repercussions. A PlayStation 4 review copy of BoxVR was provided to TheGamer this review.

Some might consider BoxVR a scant package, but it genuinely seems interested in providing a focused fitness experience with minimal fluff. It’s doubtful that it will completely overtake Beat Saber’s strong market presence, but it honestly feels like a better workout overall. Combine that quality with the conspicuous attention paid by the developers in delivering an extremely stable product on Sony’s platform (which cannot be said for many other ports), and you have a powerful asset to your fitness goals at a very reasonable cost.
