Set in a sleepy American country town in the 1980s, American Fugitive invites you to play as Will Riley. You're no angel, but you're not a killer. Yet the cold-blooded murder of your dad is the crime they've locked you up for. Fuelled by grief and a burning desire for vengeance, you must break out of jail to find the real culprit. Resident Evil is a great game with a fantastic blend of jump scares and puzzle solving. It runs well on the Switch and offers a good gameplay experience. However, unless portability is a main factor, playing it on another platform may be a better choice.

It’s a lot of fun and very tongue in cheek at times. It’s not a very deep “who dunnit”… more of a Dukes of Hazard framed by Boss Hogg type scenario… without the left over civil war racist visuals. It’s silly, over the top and… well… a lot of fun. Not a bad bit of fun for the price.

Despite the repetitive and monotonous nature of American Fugitive, I really enjoyed the story and the unique gameplay aspects. Rather than a simple twin-stick shooter or GTA classic clone, the developers introduced realistic mechanics such as breaking and entering and having to avoid being seen whilst carrying out criminal actions. There’s a lot of game to play through, although you’ll instantly feel the strain of the limited amount of gameplay mechanics on offer after a few hours. As such, I’d say this game is perfect for playing in small bursts as the missions aren’t too long, doing that will eliminate any monotonous and déjà vu gameplay. If you’re looking for a game you can pick up and play from time to time, either at home or on the go, American Fugitive is a great candidate.

Whilst I take issue with the game’s pacing and its hit and miss AI, there’s little else to scoff at here. American Fugitive is a love letter to fans of classic Grand Theft Auto. The game’s stunning world is full of varied activities and events, with no shortage of choice to take to throughout each and every aspect within. This is all held together by remarkably fluid gameplay, putting forward a sandbox that’s deep, robust, and constantly action-packed. This game was tested and reviewed on Xbox One.
