With only a gradual difficulty curve to its platforming, 140 is just a few hours long, but they’re a good few hours. There’s a vibrant and colourful minimalist art style, and it goes well with the soundtrack that really underscores and ties into the simplistic rhythm platforming.

140 is a rhythm-based platformer in which the player controls a geometric shape as it travels through two-dimensional levels that shift in time to the underlying soundtrack. A joy to play, the game is a masterclass in rhythm-based game design.

I really wish there was more to 140 because while it is a short and engaging experience, I was left wanting more.

140 is a magnetically moreish experience: delicately balanced and well thought-out. If this is what the programmer can achieve during the downtime from his day job, Playdead’s enigmatic second project can’t come soon enough.

Unlike other famous entries into the genre, with unique and conflicting level designs to offer a break from the monotony, 140 lives on that repetition. The soundtrack and gameplay sink into your inner being and stays there for the entire run time.
