XCOM 2: War of the Chosen adds extensive new content in the fight against Advent when additional resistance factions form in order to eliminate the alien threat on Earth. In response, a new enemy, known as the “Chosen,” emerges with one goal: recapture the Commander. War of the Chosen has thoroughly sunk its hooks into us, and we anticipate many late nights for months to come as we master its new challenges. Firaxis has smartly revised its own ideas and integrated mechanics from other games to strike a perfect balance between familiar and fresh.

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen is a must own for veterans and new players alike. It doesn’t matter how many hours players have put into the original XCOM 2 campaign, starting over with War of the Chosen is completely worth the time.

At the end of the day, XCOM is not a game that’s meant to allow the player to feel powerful. It’s a struggle, you’re always supposed to feel like you’re on the back foot even when things are going well, and at best you merely survive to fight another day. XCOM 2: War of the Chosen remains faithful to this idea by curating its content to be an extra layer on what’s already present; a new challenge added into the mix for veteran (or masochistic) players. There’s an enormous amount of content that enhances the game overall, as opposed to being an exceptional footnote at the end of a separately good game, which makes this the best kind of expansion. I feel like the Chosen were handled poorly narratively, starting out strong before fizzling into nothing, but that isn’t a complete deal breaker. That said, more than a year after release, the game still has a lot of problems with visual and technical bugs, which is disappointing considering WOTC is their third major expansion. If you’re a fan of XCOM 2, you’ll want to give this a crack, and any who were sitting on the fence about whether or not to play should consider this expansion a green light.

An exceptionally good expansion that adds in a mountain of new content that specifically addresses the few flaws there were with the original. Pros: The Chosen and the new rebel factions are an excellent addition, as are the soldier relationships, new enemies, and maps.

After nearly 40 hours with XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, I’m ready to say it: This is the best XCOM ever made. In addition to the new characters that you meet, Firaxis has succeeded in smoothing out the game’s notorious difficulty spikes, frustrations that are a holdover from 2012’s original XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
