I said when I started this Toukiden 2 review that I was new to the monster hunting genre. What Toukiden 2 provided was a great way to dive into the experience and learn about the genre. The gameplay loop is the clear driving force of the game, and like others of its type, there is an addictive nature to it. This is a great entry point for people new to the genre, but even experienced players are going to have a blast. Toukiden 2 is a step forward for the monster hunting genre. The open world mechanics help reduce the tiresome grind present in similar titles to a minimum, and the story will keep players engaged until the end.

Toukiden 2 is a great leap towards a much-needed evolution, and it dares to add new things and challenge tradition. Hunting games usually get an enhanced edition that adds all kinds of stuff and I eagerly await what Omega Force will bring on next time around. In the mean time, I’m gonna play more of this game for a few dozen more hours.

The original Toukiden took the Monster Hunter idea and put a classic feudal Japanese spin on it. Having originally released for the Vita it wasn't long before it saw both PS4 and the PC releases after having found success as a "Monster Hunter Clone". That simple status however is now no longer valid, as Toukiden 2 just set a new bar for the series with an open world that fans of the genre have only dreamed of. One of the biggest staples of this style of gaming has been the mission based system.

Worth Playing

Toukiden 2 does so many things right not only when compared to its predecessor but also when compared to the sub-genre as a whole. The addition of new weapons is welcome, but the Demon Hand makes combat and traversal feel much faster than before, making up for the lack of a deep combo system. The open world makes the experience feel more epic, since you don't always have to rely on missions to get some action, a fact that's strengthened by the lessened reliance on the mission board mechanic. The story remains engaging, and although the presentation could be better, it is better than most other games on the platform. Toukiden 2 is certainly one of the better monster-hunting games, and fans of the genre would do well to check it out.
