I’ve found this episode to be so enjoyable that I have a tough time believing Telltale can even top it with the finale.

Telltale's masterful storytelling keeps us hoping for the best even as that optimism is continually shattered by what is proving to be one of the most memorable tragedies ever told in gaming.

"Amid the Ruins" is a quieter more thoughtful entry in The Walking Dead Season 2 putting it at a stark contrast to other entries in the episode. When they deaths and action come however, it is more impactful despite the player's lack of overall impact on some inevitable fates.W

The story continues to develop in unexpected directions, and the suspense that’s building for Episode 5 is palpable and intense. As Episode 4 teaches, however, one can’t hope for much in a world where the dead rise. Pros: - More great storytelling and challenges for the characters as the story continues to unfold - A few solid dialogue moments that feel more challenging and puzzle-like than in previous episodes, making up for the lack of serious gameplay - Choices feel like they’re snowballing to make for some pretty intense moments - Story keeps taking unpredictable turns - Powerful themes of saving friends and serving one’s own interests keep driving Clementine’s development in interesting ways Cons: - Gameplay remains pretty simple and rarely challenging, and continues to be streamlined out of the greater experience in favor of dialogue choices - Plotting in Episode 4 feels a little less definitive than earlier episodes — there’s less of a through-line here than in the past Final Score: 90/100 The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 4: “Amid the Ruins” was reviewed using a Steam code provided by Telltale Games.

Amid The Ruins is utterly superb and is everything I want from a Walking Dead episode. Every single moment feels like it will make a difference to the narrative, and all the dialogue choices (of which there are many) can change how characters see Clementine - or each other.

Amid the Ruins is an exhilarating adventure and the best episode thus far. It gives players drastic choices to partake in, not to mention building on the relationships between Clementine and her party. It’s becoming a close knit group now with so many casualties, but it also allows for digging deeper on the emotional side of characters.

Amid the Ruins feels like the peak of the pint-sized survivor’s development. After the brutal trauma of the previous episode, we get to decide, or at least influence, what she will be like in the finale and how she’s been transformed by the events of this second season. Every moment is a struggle between Darwinism and kindness. But she’s damned either way. The group’s in bad shape.
