CRITIK
Nayuta no Kiseki (Trails of Nayuta) is an action-RPG developed by Nihon Falcom for PlayStation Portable. The game belongs to The Legend of Heroes series of role-playing video games, but is more action-oriented, and is not a mainline entry in the series. The game also features platforming elements like Ys: The Oath in Felghana. The game was never released outside of Japan but an English fan translation is available. The game happens in a world called Lost Heaven. The characters' hometown is Remnant Island, an island located in the center of Sciencia Sea, a vast ocean with countless islands. Shooting stars have been continually falling from the sky for some time, leaving much of these piled up on the island. Stones known as "Star Fragments" have been discovered in these areas. By shining a light on them in a certain way, people can see the phantom world of Lost Heaven.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is a masterful spinoff boasting its own distinct identity, with an addictive gameplay loop enhanced by several excellently woven upgrade and replayability systems, as well as a finely crafted narrative and loveable cast that works well thanks to the relatively compact scale of it all. The stellar voice work and, as in typical Falcom fare, the sublime soundtrack also serve to make this adventure a must-play no matter one’s history with the developer’s lineup. This spiritual successor of sorts to Zwei is such a considerate blast from the past that I want to see more of in Falcom’s future. This post may contain Amazon affiliate links.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is a fast-paced action-RPG with plenty of pick-up-and-play appeal, and one that fans of the genre won’t want to miss. The writing is sharp, the characters are interesting, the action is hot, and the boss battles are excellent. Fans of the middle era of Ys games in particular will want to put this at the front of their wishlist, as it does a great job of capturing the spirit of those feisty affairs. SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5 Amanda the Adventurer ($8.99) Amanda the Adventurer is a short found footage horror puzzler that involves VHS tapes with older cartoon animation, escape room elements, false senses of security, a ton of creepy scenes, and more.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails, is a great game with solid world-building and an amazing soundtrack to back it up. The characters are enthusiastic and fun, and the gameplay, while somewhat simple, is enjoyable nonetheless. A couple of very minor design issues have carried over from the original PSP version, but they don’t take much away from the game.

With a fairly enjoyable main narrative that plays second fiddle to engaging gameplay and effective presentation, The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails may be slight in terms of length when compared to other Trails games, but it’s a spinoff that matches them in quality and enjoyment. There’s something compelling about its relative simplicity and all of the small things you can do from moment to moment that all complement each other and help your character progress, both in terms of story and capability. With Ys and the Trails games typically being separated into action and turn-based combat, respectively, I’d love to see either series experiment with the other form given how well it comes off in Boundless Trails. Young Nayuta’s adventure is well worth experiencing for yourself; just don’t forget to pack a lunch.

The Legend of Nayuta is an incredibly polished experience. It feels like the culmination of Falcom’s action RPG expertise at the time, having already developed games like Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Ys VI: Ark of Napishtim, and the Zwei duology.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is a charming action RPG that’ll keep player hooked in with its slick combat and swift pacing. I loved playing through levels, completing all of their objectives, and continually upgrading my skillset, whilst the satisfying combat mechanics ensure it’s always fun to battle enemies – especially the boss encounters which offers some strategically fun showdowns. Add to that the charming presentation that manages to hold up well despite being an eleven-year-old PSP game, and it’ll be easy to see that The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is well worth the attention of action RPG fans.
