At the end of the day, the whole of The Journey Down is well worth the interest from anyone who is even remotely a fan of old-school point-and-click adventures. Although the second and third chapters feel reasonably sized for what they are, the current price feels a bit steep compared with other available titles at the same price, which offer a longer play time but, really, the genre is mostly that way and what separates good value for money from bad value for money is how much a game can instil a sense of replayability.

In my review of Chapter Two, I praised the developers for learning from what wasn't great in Chapter One, and I'm happy to see that they followed through in the final chapter. It took a long time for this story to finally see its conclusion, but I'm really glad that it did. Now that it's complete, I can definitely recommend this series to fans of point & click adventure games. If you haven't played Chapters One and Two, make sure to do so before you play Chapter Three; as of this writing, you can get all three for just $30, and that feels pretty fair to me. This review is based on a free review copy provided to RPGFan by the developer.

Moving forward, any developer looking to create a point-and-click adventure would do well to look at The Journey Down as an example of the genre done right. My recommendation before you decide to pick up the first chapter is to ensure you’re committed to the long haul. By the end of the first chapter, you’ll be left wanting more, and it only gets better from there.

The Journey Down is an unexpected delight. While point-and-click games can often be frustrating, The Journey Down manages to remain fun and engaging throughout. Its excellently-told story, beautiful art design and humorous characters certainly help in keeping you hooked. If you love classic point-and-click adventure games, make sure The Journey Down is on your radar.

It’s fair to say that The Journey Down: Chapter Three kicks on and raises the stakes massively to try and offer a finale to remember. There’s no doubt it delivers clever puzzles aplenty, requiring a logical thought process and, sadly, a lot of back-tracking to solve. The interactions with new and returning characters help to stave off the monotony, but it really could’ve done with some exciting mini-games to offer something else to do.
