CRITIK
Skylanders: Swap Force is a platformer video game developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Activision. It is the third main game in the Skylanders video game and toy franchise, following 2012's Skylanders: Giants, which was a direct sequel to 2011's Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure (the spin-off of The Legend of Spyro series). It is the game before Skylanders: Trap Team and features the voices of John DiMaggio, Jess Harnell, Audrey Wasilewski, Richard Tatum, David Sobolov, Josh Keaton, Keythe Farley, Dave Wittenberg, Joey Camen, Gregg Berger, Troy Baker and Robin Atkin Downes. It is the first Skylanders game to be released in North America before other regions, unlike the previous two games where Australia got the installments first. It is also the first Skylanders game not to be owned by Vivendi.

After playing this game alone, and with my children, as a parent I can easily recommend it, as it is a title that the whole family can play over and over again while having lots of fun.

Vicarious Visions delivers a well-evolved set of ideas for its latest return trip to the Skylanders universe, Skylanders: Swap Force.” - Character-based gameplay shapes in-game experience - Backward-compatibility for older characters - Tremendous replay factor - Simple but fun multiplayer modes - Wonky auto-aiming for certain characters - Distance between save points can be frustrating It’s easy to write off Activision’s billion-dollar Skylanders franchise as a game for kids, but given how much success the series has had so far, the numbers indicate that the merging of collectible toys and in-game adventures has apparently found the sweet spot in the all-ages marketplace. In the latest installment of the series, Skylanders: Swap Force, developer Vicarious Visions ups the ante with a new twist: character figures with components that can be “swapped” among each other to form various combinations that manifest in the game.

With better visuals and gameplay that both young and old gamers can enjoy, Skylanders SWAP Force is an addictive adventure through the Skylands that I'll be playing for the foreseeable future.

The swappable characters add a nice new mechanic and jumping is finally in. The PlayStation 4 version looks solid with better textures and resolution. It's fun for the whole family, but can be an expensive investment if your kid wants to unlock every level in the game. * The product in this article was sent to us by the developer/company. I've been reviewing products since 1997 and started out at Gaming Nexus.

The added improvements in graphics and audio will certainly outweigh any minor annoyances the Xbox One version brings. Be warned: if you already own it on any other console besides the Nintendo 3DS, it might not be worth the duplicate toys that come along with the minor bump in audio and video fidelity.
