Overview

Pharaonic is an unforgiving sidescrolling Action-RPG set in Ancient Egypt. Explore a vast kingdom full of dangers and brutal enemies while you find the truth behind Ahmosis I, the Red Pharaoh. Polish your combat skills to the finest and loot the best gear possible to even have the slightest chance of overcoming this difficult endeavor. Will you opt for lightweight equipment, trusting on your agility to avoid death? Or will you prefer to take the blow and strike back even harder? The decision is entirely yours to make. Throughout your path you will find help from the Daughters of Ishtar, as well as the oppressed countrymen. Learn new skills and subdue divine powers to overcome your opponents. Drink from your life-water canteen to heal your wounds, and acquire new equipment that will help you avoid death one more day.

Pharaonic is a visually stunning game with an art style that just makes everything pop – lots of colors and great attention to detail. I really enjoyed playing the game for my Pharaonic review, even if it’s a challenging release. A full trophy count plus a shiny platinum is yours for the taking if you think you’re good enough to handle the challenge. Are you ready?

There’s plenty to like in Pharaonic, including fantastic visuals, interesting (albeit repetitive) character design and moment-to-moment gameplay that is hard to beat. The development team has somehow managed to make a Souls-style game accessible, with one less dimension.

Despite its flaws, I had a lot of fun with Pharaonic. The beautiful world and reaction-based combat are genuinely enjoyable. However, the lack of enemy diversity, the tedious backtracking and the questionable checkpoint locations seem like design missteps. Ultimately, the right person might find these negatives as insignificant.

It’s a vicious side-scrolling combat adventure that punishes even the tiniest of mistakes. Some people enjoy rage-inducing games, and that’s ok as that is exactly what this game does. Sure, the combat is enjoyable, exploring is fun, and the graphics are easy on the eyes, but the game is fun until the fifth or sixth time you die and have to restart and re-do everything you just did, and no amount of satisfaction will make that a worthwhile experience.
