Where Penumbra really wins through however is in its storytelling and puzzle solving. I would like to have seen a lot more of this as it's the vagueness and lack of information that truly keeps you gripped to the plot throughout; as you share in the main protagonist's complete bewilderment.

Creeping around in the dark with only a flashlight to hand whilst the wind whistles through a passageway and footsteps can be heard around every corner can be extremely disconcerting, and it's a testament to good game design that it manages to unsettle right from the start. Big-name horror titles such as Resident Evil and F.E.A.R can certainly learn from some of the things that Penumbra gets right, and just goes to prove that sometimes the simple ideas are definitely the best. Penumbra Overture PC review by Manny Brown - Tuesday 15th May 2007 For all those decrying the state of indie gaming, some of the recent success stories from small development teams would surely beg to differ.

Penumbra: Overture focuses on delivering immersive gameplay by providing an engaging storyline, a surreal atmosphere, and a very creepy playing experience. The way the developers incorporated the physics engine with the character interaction provides an interesting and unique touch.

Penumbra: Overture will surely strike a chord with fans of adventure and horror games. And even if you're not crazy about those genres, I'd still suggest downloading the demo and giving it a try.
