If you’re an old codger like me with fond memories of old 8-bit computer games, picking up a title that evokes those memories so well is a no-brainer. If, as is more likely, you’re a young whippersnapper (I hate you), I still thoroughly recommend Kinetic Edge. It’s a terrific mix of genres that’s great in single player and even better in multiplayer. Get on it. Kinetic Edge is available on PC through Steam. I enjoyed Kinetic Edge‘s simple premise, amount of content and gameplay loop, but I got beyond annoyed with its presentation. It’s a perfect game to spend a few dozen minutes at a time, though. Pick up a mode, play a few levels, try to beat your scores or defeat other players, and then give your damaged eyeballs a well-deserved rest. I’m also looking forward to an eventual Switch port; this game would fit like a glove in that system.

Minigolf aside, Kinetic Edge offers a highly enjoyable package. The online races are a blast, and while the other modes don’t quite have the same lasting appeal, they’re still solid party game options. From any perspective, Kinetic Edge is a great multiplayer effort that is both stylish and rewarding to master. — Alex Prakken Disclosures: This game was developed and published by SCT, the code used for this review was obtained from the publisher, and is available exclusively on PC.

I didn’t fall in love with this game, but with the right updates and tweaks to the game, I could definitely see it going somewhere as a fun time-killer, but not really much more than that.

Kinetic Edge is a stripped-down platformer with a nicely balanced difficulty. Sure, the game is an effortless experience, but it’s unclear what atmosphere SCT was trying to achieve. To make matters worse, when the fundamentals are so simplistic, any missteps are hard to ignore. The mechanics are near perfect to what SCT was trying to achieve, but it feels like the bare minimum. It needs a stylistic overhaul to match. I’m not inherently against the cyberpunk approach, but it’s over the top. Without any change, Kinetic Edge will please only a handful of dedicated platformer players but will deter casual fans with its intense look.

Kinetic Edge is a basic experience that does not rise to the top of the “gauntlet” style of titles currently out there in the market. It has an identity, but that alone cannot hold this title up.
