Overview

It's 1976 - a different '76. Stretched out before you are thousands of miles of desert - the American Southwest. The massive engine roars as you slam down the accelerator. It's time to get funked up. You are Groove Champion, auto-vigilante. Your agenda: Payback for your dead sister. Your weapon: A 425-horsepower '72 Picard Piranha with two 50-caliber M60 machine guns on top and a flame-thrower on the side. You're one mean dude in an even meaner ride. They've messed with the wrong Champion.

The music is the best I've ever heard in a game. I'd buy the soundtrack even if the game never existed. The songs are all originals, composed and performed by some serious funkateers from the Bay Area.

You want weapons? I76 has about 25 different weapons. Slug throwers, SPP Pods, Flamethrowers, Mortars, Droppers, and even a hand-held 45 caliber automatic pistol are there for the taking. There are about 15 different views to choose from to set your sights on the enemy, and there's even a Missile Cam, for a rocket's-eye view of the mayhem. When you target an enemy, you see a status bar around that enemy, much the same way the Command and Conquer-type games show damage to the enemies.

The second major problem is the wildly fluctuating difficulty levels. Some missions will be easily completed in one try; others will require days upon days of unsuccessful attempts. Not that the challenge is insurmountable, but it seems somewhat misguided for Activision not to have included difficulty levels - or at least some options to make the game easier.
