Hyper-5 combines solid shoot ‘em up action with realistic visuals and the end result is a bit of a mixed bag. I like the look of it but those visuals also cause visibility issues for the player. While the gameplay is fun and upgrading your ship is satisfying, you’ll be playing the same few stages over and over to do so which can get a bit old. Overall, for the price I think this is a good buy for fans of the genre so long as you take note of the drawbacks and are OK with them. *Hyper-5 is available now on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Hyper-5 is an entertaining game for fans of horizontal Shmups with a realistic look for the ship and environments. Can get repetitive at times, but the interesting enemy designs like the ones that look like Transformers are a lot of fun to battle.

While it tries to create some extra interest with some cool and somewhat cinematic transitions, the core play experience is a mixed bag While there are some things I think Hyper-5 does that help it to differentiate itself from some of its more budget-minded shooter competition, as a whole package it’s hard not to find it a bit frustrating.
