Overview

In Golem, you play as an adventurous kid who has been seriously injured. You are stuck at home in your bed, dreaming of exploring the outside world. You gradually develop the power to create and control stone creatures known as golems. You see through their eyes, direct their movements, and use them to explore beyond the confines of your room. At first, you can only build small doll-sized golems to send around your room… but eventually your powers will grow, until you can send enormous 15-foot tall giants to explore an ancient abandoned city.

Golem is a cute, point-and-click puzzle game which features a stellar soundtrack, a unique art style, and numerous puzzles. With only a few directional issues, the game provides an interesting take on the puzzle genre. Each level is layered with numerous mysteries, beautiful artwork and a great soundtrack to compliment the visual spectacle of the tower looming overhead.

Golem's crunchy combat, strong narrative, and enticing score are some of the best PS VR has to offer, but nausea risks compromising the full package. The long-delayed PS VR game Golem feels like a classic on paper: a tragic intro with well-voiced characters, a beautiful and unique run-down fantasy world, and a front-loaded promise of action and exploration.

When it comes to both its cinematic and gameplay elements, Golem manages to remain an enjoyable and engaging tale throughout.Golem gameplay video → BoxVR Review PlayStation 4 ★★★★☆ Getting your body moving is important so if you're a real couch potato, BoxVR will whip your lazy butt into shape. Although I mostly stick to my elliptical machine for daily exercise, I used to play Gold's Gym: Cardio Workout for Wii all the time.

Longbow Games believes that solving puzzles is satisfying in itself without any other rewards than making progress. And it really works. The gameplay is such addictive that my time away from the game was filled with anxiety to get back into it and solve the big riddle of the tower. The game didn’t need any words to tell its little tale spanning ten levels.

Golem is nothing to scoff at. It looks and sounds beautiful, it has an open world that can be explored freely, and the sword combat feels satisfying. On the other hand, cumbersome and awkward controls, a decent amount of motion sickness, and a few frustrating game mechanics prevent the title from reaching its potential. If you have a strong stomach and think you can make do with the controls, Golem will provide some joy, even though it is far from a VR masterpiece.

Golem attempts but fails to find harmony in bringing a vague tale together with any sort of emotional resonance. That might have been easier to forgive if the journey itself was exceptional. Instead Golem's inconsistent puzzles and jarring difficulty spikes will infuriate you more than they infatuate.
