Ganbare! Super Strikers is a fun tactical RPG that happens to feature soccer players. The turn-based approach works well overall, though the formula can wear a little thin after playing several matches in a row.

It’s very entertaining once you play by the title’s rules, ignoring real football strategy. It’s best, for example, to push up and crowd the midfield, so that you can block any balls into forward positions. Getting through on goal can require a degree of luck, but it’s fun when you plan out and perfectly execute a move that results in the ball hitting the back of the net. There’s a full campaign to complete, as well as league and tournament modes for single and local play, providing just enough action for sports fans in search of something different.

As a strategy game, Gambare! Super Strikers works well enough, but the novelty quickly wears a bit thin. The general gameplay is loaded with options to play around with, but a lot of it feels too reliant on luck, and we just can’t shake the feeling that it should be just a little bit faster. Still, if you’re a fan of the sport and want to get stuck in with the more strategic aspect of football, then this will definitely keep you busy for a while.

Ganbare! Super Strikers is a fun arcade-style tactical football RPG game. For those familiar, it is akin to playing a light version of Inazuma Eleven, but with little to no storyline. It is quite fun to play but it is incredibly short, though the option is there for you play this locally with a friend. This could be great for those that like tactical strategy RPGs, especially if you’re a football fan, and is very simple to pick up and play.

Ganbare! Super Strikers lacks the elements that can make a sports game great and it lacks the depth of a good tactical RPG. There is potential in this unlikely mash-up of genres, but the balance hasn’t been struck here.

Much like the real thing, the best thing about soccer video games is seeing the beautiful game in full flight. Ganbare! Super Strikers has a lot of the same elements of soccer (and some enhanced moves that, in the right circumstances, could have been kind of neat) but as a package, it gets bogged down in its twist. Turn-based battles aren’t inherently incompatible with soccer, but the two certainly don’t mesh well here.
