CRITIK
Darkout is a sandbox action-game with survival and strategy components. You are the only survivor after your escape pod crashes on a strange planet. The environment is full of mysterious and hostile shadow creatures, and the only way to survive will be to gather resources used to craft and researching new weapons and technologies. The world is sunk in permanent darkness and the shadow creatures surrounding you are only sensitive to the light, and plays a key role in the battle against the dark. You will have to use your strategic skills to build up new facilities which will allow you to progress further and explore the vast landscape. Darkout brings a completely new experience to the player, frenetic, distressing and graphically far superior to what has been seen before in the sandbox genre.

However, there are some issues that have to be overlooked to fully enjoy Darkout. The lack of a story (at least an introduction of some sort), or any external motivation can lead to a situation where the player is mining just for the sake of mining, and crafting just for the sake of crafting, which can be fine for some, but not for all. Also it takes quite an investment to fully learn just what it is you are doing with all the things you are crafting and scavenging.

Both Terraria and Minecraft handle the basic mechanics of crafting and resource gathering better, and aside from an intriguing and visually enticing setting, there's nothing here that really makes Darkout stand out. It borrows mechanics without refining and sufficiently improving them, bogging the player down with unnecessary inventory management and clunky mechanics.

Fans of the genre will definitely find more enjoyment but, to the average player, there isn’t much here to strongly recommend. AVERAGE.
