1849 is a city management game for tablets and PCs, set during the California Gold Rush. With all of the peril and possibility of the new frontier, 1849 challenges players to build a thriving mining empire in 19th century California. Inspired by games such as Caesar III, SimCity 4, and the Civilization series, 1849 strives to bring an immersive simulation game experience into the mobile age.

It absolutely nails the mechanics for a city-builder and makes it super easy to jump in and build a great city. The game’s biggest drawback is its scope.

There is fun to be had here. It's just that, in my opinion, the amusement provided is severely limited by the lack of challenge, the lack of diversity and the low grade graphics and sound. Top game moment: As with all city-builders, maximising the highest density residences gives some degree of satisfaction. Putting it bluntly, 1849 is more or less Caesar with wild west themed assets.
